Visit Place Carnot, a witness to Lyon’s history

Place Carnot, in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement, is a veritable crossroads of history and urban life. Nestled between the Perrache train station and the lively Ainay district, this square is a must for locals and visitors alike.

The history of Place Carnot

Ah, the Place Carnot! Nestled in the heart of Lyon, between Perrache station and the historic Ainay district, this square has more stories to tell than your grandmother at a family dinner. Once a simple wasteland, it has been transformed over the centuries to become the lively crossroads it is today.

Let’s go back in time: in the 18th century, the square was just a vast, unassuming space. But then, in the 19th century, the Perrache train station appeared, and the square began to take on a life of its own. Renamed in honor of Lazare Carnot, hero of the French Revolution and expert in defenses, it quickly became a strategic and symbolic place.
The square has also witnessed darker times, notably during the Second World War, when it saw troops pass through and heard the rumors of the time. But always resilient, Place Carnot has risen and reinvented itself, like an urban phoenix. Today, between Christmas markets, festive events and Sunday strollers, it is the very embodiment of Lyon’s vivacity.
And what about its equestrian statue? Erected in honor of the Republic, it proudly watches over the square, reminding everyone that Carnot was not only a great military strategist, but also a fervent defender of republican values.

Architecture and statue

The buildings lining Place Carnot are a harmonious blend of Haussmann and neoclassical styles. These elegant buildings, with their ashlar facades, wrought-iron balconies and large windows, are a reminder of Lyon’s rich past. Today, they house hotels, offices and residences that add to the lively atmosphere of the square.

At the center of the square stands the statue of the Republic, erected in 1890. This imposing bronze sculpture depicts an allegorical figure of the French Republic, seated majestically on a pedestal. At her feet, two lions symbolize strength and vigilance, while bas-reliefs decorate the base, depicting historical scenes and republican symbols. The statue is a tribute to Lazare Carnot, the French politician and soldier nicknamed the “Great Carnot”.

The fountains, with their refreshing jets of water, are popular meeting points for passers-by and families. Other statues include busts and monuments dedicated to various historical figures from Lyon, recounting fragments of local history.
